L’Oréal USA has voluntarily recalled an indelible conditioner under its Mizani brand due to contamination concerns.

A subsidiary of L’Oréal has initiated a recall of 487 units of Mizani 25 Miracle Cream indelible conditioner packaged in 250 ml plastic tubes due to potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia bacteria.

The B. cepacia group of bacteria poses little medical risk to healthy people, but can cause respiratory infections in people with certain health problems, such as weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease.

The bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics.

The Mizani brand specializes in professional products for wavy, curly and curly hair. It joined the L’Oréal USA lineup along with Dark & Lovely and other brands as part of the cosmetics giant’s acquisition of Carson Products in 2000.

Mizani 25 Miracle Cream Non-Removable Conditioner, the recalled product, contains fennel seed oil and coconut oil, which detangle and moisturize hair.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued numerous recalls to cosmetics manufacturers related to bacterial contamination.

Last year, Kao USA also reported cases of contamination of Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer, individual units of which may show the presence of bacteria of the Pluralibacter gergoviae species.
Henkel in 2022 voluntarily recalled 180 bottles of Alterna Bond Repair Leave-in Heat indelible protective spray due to possible B. cepacia contamination.

And earlier this month, Johnson & Johnson also voluntarily recalled at the wholesale level Clean & Clear Morning Burst Facial Cleanser – also due to microbial contamination.
