With January in full swing and the last decade feeling like, well, decades ago, it’s time to look at what the new year has to offer. In terms of beauty, the market value is going up, with figures predicting a 3% increase from last year (figures from Statista UK).

With that in mind, online marketplace OnBuy.com was curious to learn more about the perfume trends of 2020, so they did some research on the matter, alongside a survey of 2,600 consumers, to find out what perfume lovers are looking for in 2020. Simultaneously, they took a look at the perfume encyclopaedia site, Fragrantica.com for more information on the most popular luxury releases of 2020.

1. Femininity
While last year the focus was more directed towards unisex designs and scents, this year, perfume manufacturers had one word in mind: femininity. With 70% of perfume bottles being a shade of pink, it seems like the trend has slowly shifted from a more unisex approach, to a more feminine one.

Other colours we can see in the 2020 perfume bottle trends are beige, gold and red, which are all screaming classic, feminine and ageless.
Our survey has also shown that 58% of women prefer a feminine scent, over the 31% preferring a unisex one, while 11% would go for masculine fragrances.

2. Nature inspired notes
When it comes to perfume notes, the one that will linger in the air the most this year is woody, with half of the perfumes from the research containing this note. Musky and floral notes such as rose are also very popular with 42% of women saying they prefer nature inspired notes this year.

3. Edible notes
Another trend this year when it comes to notes, is that they should be edible. 49% of women taking part in the survey have said they like sweet perfumes with notes such as vanilla and coconut, which they find ‘irresistible’.

4. Body sprays over luxury
Perhaps a surprising trend this year, women have said they prefer buying less expensive fragrance options, over the more luxurious brands. In fact, body sprays are the top option for 65% of the women taking part in the survey.

5. Classic bottles
When it comes to the bottles, the trend is shifting from the dramatic shapes we’ve seen in the past year, back to the classic, simple ones. This trend will satisfy the 75% of women who prefer this bottle design over the more creative ones, the main reasons being that ‘they are easier to use’ and that ‘classic is timeless’.
