Analytical methods for testing perfumes and cosmetics
Balakina M.V., Ph.D. (Pharmaceuticals)

In laboratories and on production are often faced with the evaluation of the quality. At the same time, both the quality of raw materials and finished products are evaluated. The use of modern analytical methods facilitates the task of researchers and manufacturers. This review presents some of the methods of analysis of perfumery and cosmetic products.

Simple analytical method for quantification of perfumes in aqueous media
Tsarkova L.A., Ph.D. (Chemistry), Soboleva O.A., Ph.D. (Chemistry), Department of Colloid Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov

The possibility of quantitative determination of the content of aroma substances in the carrier (in aromatized salts for bath wellness and as components of detergent compositions) using dynamic tensiometry method (maximum pubble pressure) is demonstrated. Moreover, an assessment of the stability and shelf life of the product was carried out. Thus, the results obtained can be used to optimize the composition and fabrication processing of products containing aroma substances, as well as to assess the release / evaporation of perfumes from the products.
Another important aspect of the developed method is the possibility to evaluate a real molecular solubility of aroma substances / essential oils, which are typically poorly soluble in water. A comparison of our results with the published data shows that the latter refer rather to the so-called mesoscale solubility of organic liquids in aqueous media.
Further development of the proposed approach will allow assessing molecular interactions of aroma substances with other components of detergents and cosmetic formulations, such as surfactants, polymers, salts and pigments.
