Bioenergy and regeneration of the extracellular matrix

Fabrice Lefevre, Research and marketing manager, Induchem AG

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex environment that plays a key role in maintaining the firmness and elasticity of the skin. The renewal of this extracellular matrix is highly dependent upon metabolic energy flows, and the reduction in cell energy levels caused by ageing largely explains the deterioration of the ECM over time. This deterioration can be reversed by providing the cells with energy sources that compensate for the loss of energy associated with age.
