Hyaluronic acid is the skin’s most important hydration factor. It’s molecule forms a three-dimensional network that acts like a sponge that literally traps water around and inside its folds. In the case of hyaluronic acid, the individual molecules are the sugars D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, linked together to form a disaccharide. The length of the hyaluronic acid molecule can range from 2 to 25,000 disaccharides, with a molecular weight ranging from 800 to 20,000,000 Dalton (Da), with the average molecular weight being 3MDa in joints and about 2 MDa in skin.
