Transformation of Regulatory Practices for Detergents as a Step Towards Green Chemistry. Natural Sodium Sulfate as an Alternative to NaCl and the Path to Safe products, Protection of Human Health and Ecosystems

Aniskina E. N., Advisor to the President of the Russian Union of Chemists

Sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄) has a hazard class 4 (slightly hazardous substance). The paper focuses on a comparative assessment of the impact of inorganic fillers: sodium chloride, natural sodium sulfate (derived from galluritic raw materials), and synthetic sodium sulfate on the ecotoxicological parameters of powder synthetic detergents (e.c. laundry detergents). Research demonstrates unique functional advantages and a compensatory effect of natural sodium sulfate in the composition of powder synthetic detergents. Its use in industry ensures improved flowability of laundry detergents, prevention of caking, enhanced cleaning ability, and high level of the biodegradation (biodegradability of powder synthetic detergents with sodium sulfate reaches 75–93% at optimal concentrations, while NaCl limits this figure to 32–59%).
