Cosmetic claims substantiation. Part III. Еvaluation of photoprotective effects in vitro and in vivo
M. Daniel, Е. Douls, N. Radionov, Laboratoire BIO-EC (Longjumeau, France)

Photoprotection is one of the most important skin-care actions, considering the real danger of solar irradiation for human health. Excessive sun exposure causes phototoxicity, photoimmunosuppression, photoageing and skin cancer. Sun-care products are abundant on the market while their efficacy should be evaluated and convincingly proved. Animal testing of cosmetic products and ingredients is reasonably forbidden in many countries. Alternative models allow a fine-tunning of experimental procedures to support photoprotective cosmetic claims.

An effective anti-cellulite cream is a myth or a reality?

G. Dzenichristos, LipoTherapeia, London

Of all aesthetic conditions cellulite is the trickiest, the most “impossible” to treat with any method: diet, exercise, treatments or creams. One-sided approaches are not going to work. So bearing in mind that by manufacturing a cellulite cream you must tread carefully between increased consumer expectations, increased cost for larger quantities of creams for large body areas and consumer apathy and skepticism (consumers previously disappointed by exaggerated claims), here is a guide of what makes a good cellulite cream.

Such different shines

K. Petsitis, Technical Support Specialist EU Decoratives Cos., Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany

Advertisements promote cosmetics with so many different product names and claims, without offering consumers clear definitions of what the terms specifically mean. This article aims to define and summarize three important make-up trends – illumination, radiance, and strobing – as examples of popular claims in recent years. The goal is to identify the background of these claims and to gain a better overview and understanding. This article offers an approach for consistent and successful claim support – either with functional fillers or pearlescent pigments.

Eco-friendly cleaning: a new concept for the use of hydrophilic protein films for cleaning and protecting surfaces

Cleaning, lubricating, separating – a whole host of industrial and household processes can be made more environmentally friendly and efficient with proteins. Polyfunctional protein molecules were specifically designed to adhere to surfaces such as steel, glass and aluminum. There they form protective layers of hydrated protein chains that facilitate the removal of dirt by increasing the water attraction on the surface. This innovation not only enables perfect cleaning results without aggressive chemicals, but also helps to significantly improve the skin and environmental friendliness of detergents and cleaning agents. Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH and DB Regio AG Schleswig-Holstein already use protein-based agents to clean their rail vehicles, instead of alkaline or acidic detergents.

Defoamers in household care
D.A. Merkulov, Ph.D (Chemistry)

A defoamer or an anti-foaming agent is a chemical additive that reduces and hinders the formation of foam in industrial process liquids. The terms anti-foam agent and defoamer are often used interchangeably. Commonly used agents are insoluble oils, polydimethylsiloxanes and other silicones, certain alcohols, stearates and glycols. The additive is used to prevent formation of foam or is added to break a foam already formed.

PACKAGING & LABLE

Single-use systems on the packaging market
E. Berezina

One of the leading trends of the modern packaging market is the creation of systems that simplify the use of products and create additional convenience to consumers. The movement towards the reduction of volumes, weight loss and the production of monodose packaging takes place in response to the demand of modern society. Active life, travel and lack of time naturally form the requirements for the production of formats that allow them to be used in such conditions – a single-use package. Another important factor affecting the popularity of single-use packaging is its ability to introduce the potential buyer to the product without the need to purchase the product in its original packaging. The cost of full-size volumes is often quite high, while there is no guarantee that the recipe will suit the user and will give the desired effect. Single-use packaging as a sampler occupies a large market share and becomes a key marketing and branding tool for modern cosmetic brands. Also mini formats have become an ideal solution for storing particularly delicate recipes in anti-aging products. This review is devoted to single-use packaging and offers to get acquainted with the novelties of the market.

More Flexibility!

Flexible packaging is an abundant mix «4-in-1»: economy, compactness, convenience and attractive appearance. It is not surprising that it is among the top 5 most popular packaging solutions.
